Learning Management with a Project Management twist

January 2020 - September 2020

The Challenge

  • Teammates need a platform that encourages continued learning and expansion of skills

  • Organizational leaders want to empower learners to track learning goal progress and get results that impact their business positively

  • Give learners the ability to save and archive resources useful to their skill growth

Discovery Insights

“When asked about learning goals...my manager is not currently sure what to focus on. It’s a regular topic of conversation...

...We use product documentation, but there isn’t a lot of documentation for learning resources.”

Meaghan - Software Engineer

In Meaghan’s workplace, there was plenty of documentation regarding the products themselves, but nothing supplemental. Additional knowledge that could help contextualize problems would help the entire dev team work more efficiently.

“I forgot about the Resource feature when beta testing...There isn’t anything showcasing it to the user so it seems like it’s flying under the radar.

This goes for the extra features, too. People likely won’t use them if they aren’t shown clearly.”

Morgan - Software Engineer

It was clear that our UI in its current state wasn’t providing the user with a clear enough path. In order for the app to be useful to its users, I need to set them up for success in my redesign.

“Gathering quality content is hard to do when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. This results in a lot of Googling...

...Getting exposure to other talent is key. Seeing how others work and solve problems helps you develop new ways on your own.”

Chuong - Software Engineer

I was starting to see a pattern in our research that showed users were having a hard time locating resources that would be useful because they didn’t know exactly what they were looking for.

If exposure to talent is key, then we need to leverage that ideology in the redesign. It would be useful if team leaders could curate resources for their teammates based on the projects and goals our users are setting for themselves in the app.

This was a really fun project to work on.

As a designer, it was a valuable experience that showed me how to work in lockstep with a developer.

It also taught me how to work, communicate, and fit into an AGILE environment.

This project contextualized the necessity of user empathy in our process. Real-life scenarios are the best teachers after all.
